Reuse Center Associate - Queens

This is for a full time position at our Astoria reuse center ( This is an hourly job, (hours: 10:00 a.m. -- 6:00 p.m.) covering Saturday and Sunday and three weekdays (Monday, Tuesday and Friday usually).

  • Make sales assistance and provide excellent customer service, including operating the cash register and answering the telephone.
  • Accept donations of salvaged building materials. Carefully unload trucks into processing area or appropriate part of reuse center.
  • Assist with processing and pricing donations.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of center and inventory, including design and set- up of displays.
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment by keeping shelves, aisles, storage areas, and equipment neat and in proper working order, while complying with all procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Assist in the daily housekeeping and maintenance of reuse center grounds such as sweeping, mopping, and general maintenance.
  • Work reliably and effectively, both independently and as part of team of staff/volunteers.
  • Lead teams of work trainees in organizing center.
  • Attend weekly reuse center meetings and quarterly all-staff meetings.


  • Ability to physically lift/move inventory of up to 100 lbs.
  • Knowledge of construction and building materials.
  • Concern about the environment.
  • Basic computer literacy--ability to do data entry and navigate within the Windows operating environment--(knowledge of "Quick Books Point of Sale" a plus).
  • Retail/sales and warehouse experience preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong math skills.
  • Collaborative and active listener, open to input and feedback, takes direction well.
  • Strong communicator -- ability to present information clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • High energy; even-keeled temperament.
  • Ability to come in early, stay late on occasion and always be on time.
  • Work a regular weekend shift absolutely necessary.
  • Experience working with volunteers and/or work training groups a plus.


  • $15-16 per hour.

The NYC Organics Collection Outreach Associate is based out of Big Reuse, one of the NYC Compost Project host sites, and is directly managed by Organics Outreach Manager at DSNY.
The NYC Organics Collection Outreach Associate is primarily responsible for providing NYC residents that live in the organics collection areas with information about the NYC Organics Collection Program. The Outreach Associate will focus in Brooklyn and Queens to build enthusiasm about the program so as to increase resident participation and lower contamination rates. Outreach Associates will work alongside the delivery trucks for a 2-month period, speaking with residents and answering any questions about the program while the organics bins are being delivered. Additionally, Outreach Associates will staff information tables in the various neighborhoods so as to educate residents about the program after the bins have been delivered. Candidates need to be able to track the necessary programmatic information and submit to the Organics Outreach Manager as requested.
Position Schedule:
  • Various temporary positions available, working from 9/12/16 - 12/19/16.
  • Daily travel required.
  • 35 hours/week for 12 weeks.
  • Work weeks vary and include Sun-Thurs, Tues – Sat, and Mon – Fri
  • Schedules vary between 8am - 4pm, 9am-5pm, and 10am – 6pm.
  •  Explain how to participate in organics collection, including how to set-up and maintain the kitchen collector and outdoor bin.
  • Answer questions from residents and general public during bin deliveries and at general outreach events using appropriate talking points.
  • Take notes if residents or the general public needs follow up on an issue, and communicate concerns to the Organics Outreach Manager accordingly.
  • Offer print materials to residents in the delivery areas.
  • Provide outreach to local convenience stores and hardware stores to carry proper compostable bags.
  • Ideal candidates will be interested in public outreach and show enthusiasm towards composting, food scrap and yard waste recycling.
  • Outgoing public speaker, ease with interfacing with the public. Comfortable in a wide range of environments.
  • Valid NYS driver’s license and is willing to drive, using Zip cars and/or rental cars, as needed in NYC.
  • Chinese, Spanish, Polish, Arabic, or Russian language fluency an asset.
  • Experience with a wide range of computer applications (Excel, MS Word, Outlook, +)
  • Able to work effectively both in teams and independently.
  • Knowledge of NYC and familiarity with its neighborhoods.
  • Minimum two years of related work experience.
  • Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree (Preferably in Environmental or Horticultural Science or another related field)

Temporary Position with Deconstruction and Donations Teams

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Work with Donations and Deconstruction teams to pick up and sometimes dismantle items that are being donated to Big Reuse.
  • Be available on an "on-call basis" for working pick-ups and deconstruction jobs. Hours will fluctuate on a daily basis.
  • Applicant must have a good work ethic.
  • Work reliably and effectively, both independently and as part of team of staff/volunteers.
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment and comply with all procedures, rules, and regulations.


  • Heavy lifting and moving of inventory will be required (100lbs).
  • Experience on a construction site/project and or job site is preferred.
  • Knowledge of building materials and basic hand tools is a plus.
  • New York drivers license is a plus, especially experience driving a truck. Big Reuse has a 16 foot box truck - please mention if you have experience driving a similar vehicle.
  • Flexible schedule is required - lead time for jobs ranges from one week to one day's notice.
