The NYC Compost Project hosted by Big Reuse

The NYC Compost Project Hosted by Big Reuse is part of a community-scale composting network that works to rebuild our soils by providing New Yorkers with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to produce and use compost locally.

HOW WE COMPOST

We compost food scraps locally at our processing site under the Queensboro Bridge in LIC, Queens and at our Salt Lot facility located on the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn. In 2019, we diverted over 1.7 million pounds of organic waste from landfills! Email [email protected] to learn about tours.

REQUEST FINISHED COMPOST

Due to overwhelming demand, we have temporarily closed this request form, please check back later this month to request compost for April.

We help improve the soil in our neighborhood by distributing finished compost to community greening groups and through volunteer powered stewardship events. To help out, contact us at [email protected] or fill out this form.

CITY-WIDE DROP-OFF LOCATIONS

Help reduce landfill waste and methane emissions by saving your food scraps and bringing them to a food scrap drop-off site (FSDO).

In the Fall of 2019 many FSDOs throughout the city transitioned to new management under GrowNYC. Big Reuse still manages seven drop-off locations. If your community group accepts food scraps and wants to be listed on the city-wide FSDO map, or if you would like to open a Public Food Scrap Drop-Off Site for Your Community, click here.
